It’s not a problem for Earl so why does he care. I am sure like most men he hears far more than he responds to.

Given what Opal and her sister say, I don’t blame him.

It’s all good..if it’s important maybe they will repeat it so your brain can process it..

I am reminded of the time during the Cuban Missile Crisis when a later message from Khrushchev would lead down the path to all out nuclear war but a previous message could lead down the path to a stand-down.-President Kennedy decided to selectively ignore the latter and accept the former. Khrushchev decided to pretend like he never said the latter and only the former.-Billions of lives were saved via selective hearing.-Earl follows greatness and has probably had much peace by pretending to not hear complaints and ultimata.
