Without a military, who would ensure that the aid gets to where it needs to go and not get stolen? IIRC, a large part of the reason why aid isn’t as effective as it should be is that local warlords in some of the impoverished areas are intercepting it and taking it for themselves.

To ladykat: Why not? When you turn a corner, the ride looks different and there’s always a corner ahead that you can’t see around until you’re there.

Really when you come to it.Life is but a dream.I see it this way. With all the rich people in the world not one of them have never gave their money away and saved folks. Now they will ask you to give YOUR money so they can save folks but think of all the folks that could be saved by the super rich.I never heard of Lennon ever giving all his money to the poor. He would back the idea but sold his autograph. He even sang a song about it. But never actually did it. Of course they have their foundations but they rely on YOUR funding to keep them going.Just think of how many could be saved if Bill Gates gave his yearly salary to the poor.Branson and his space trips. With all his funds he could do it for free but you will pay to go.Sure send it all to the foreign countries. Lets not help the homeless and needy here among us locally. Doing the foreign makes you a humanitarian, gets your face on Time. Doing it locally gets you noticed on the local news….maybe.You see his one statement. Give up spending elsewhere and give it to the Foundation and that would solve everything. After all the years I have lived I have noticed one thing. Nothing changes except the names and places. The same actions continue.We didn’t start the fire. It was always burning since the world;s been turning. No,we did not light it but we tried to fight it.When we are gone it will still go on and on and on. It would just be nice to have some more help from the big boys.

This choice calls for far more courage than that needed to fight and compete with one another.

The choice is the heart of it. For its in that choice and the understanding of the concequences that you find real courage and heroism. Its a hard thing to do for it will have you facing off against the very powerful forces of the status quo and the comfort of the familar..Most people will not make that choice. They will throw a few coins in the basket next to the cashier and throw in a little more during the holiday. All the while ignoring those who did make the choice.

I’ve sometimes wondered what the Colemans would say to themselves on their deathbeds. “What a great life. I made a lot of money.”? Maybe so.

I could not find any information that John Lennon ever sold his autograph. That was not common in the 1960s and 1970s so there is no reason to believe that. He also donated large sums of money and some bulletproof vests to the NYPD. How’s that for local considering he lived in NY during that time?

That’s pretty much what they did in Costa Rica. They eliminated their army in 1948 and turned the money to education. Education is free for all included the doctor’s degree. Then you are required to serve two years service for your country. It’s a great place using part of this idea.

I wouldn’t consider John Lennon one of the good guys. He hit women and abandoned children.

It’s sad that as a society, we have made the determination to abandon the poor, the homeless, the mentally ill. Whenever I hear people say not to perform a certain act because the money could be better spent on those groups I listed, I always think “Why? We’re not going to spend it on them in any case.” Probably just go for tax cuts for the wealthy or the military.
