Wow—there is a serious gap here between people who actually read the strip and people who just drop in to make snotty comments. Here’s a quick rerun.

Alex’s mom is JJ, who abandoned both Alex’s dad (Mike Doonesbury) and Alex to run off with Zeke. JJ’s mom is Joanie Caucus, who abandoned JJ and her dad to hop on the back of BD’s motorcycle, accompanied by Mike, when the guys were college students—to run off and live in the commune at Walden (not a sex thing, a liberation thing). So much for who abandoned whom.

- These as-yet-faceless babies are six months old. Their mother Alex is not pregnant again.- Alex got her PhD from MIT this past spring and then the research program she was hired for (in robotics? I forget) was canceled. She is tending bar now. Leo is in college getting an undergrad degree and he is a sound guy in a recording studio. I don’t see how these are not “real jobs”—they pay the rent, and both Alex and Leo appear to have little down time (certainly not enough to spend making snide, spiteful comments about fictional characters in comic strips they don’t even read). - Alex’s mom JJ may yet wind up living next door, since she appears to be getting sick of Zeke’s evil ways, at least where other women are concerned. - I am wondering whether we will see serious irony with JJ applying for the nanny position or buying the empty condo next door.

I thought Alex was waitressing because of government budget cuts. It might be cheaper to stay at home than hire a nanny. Or she could work evening hours and Leo could take care of the twins.

Regular readers of Doonesbury know how insecure Alex is.

As noted above, Alex has… issues. Perhaps Leo will help her deal with them, time will tell.

Poor Leo. First the war wounds him, now his wife castrates him. (No, she’s not insecure.)
