The body can’t tell the difference between Trans Fats to their counterpart of natural fats, and they do the same amount of damage if eaten TOO much. Yet, the Government isn’t banning the natural fats….oops…give it time….
I don’t know what the %@^^ trans-fats are particularly but since I don’t generally eat process food that comes from a vat out of some factory it probably doesn’t matter. Aside from that if the government says this stuff is bad they probably should be ignored these days as it probably is something so irrelevant as to be insignificant.All the significant stuff was regulated decades ago leaving bureaucrats only meaningless stuff to regulate today.
In our economic ecology, unhealthy food holds an important place. It employs workers in the processed food industries, gives jobs to transport employees, sponsors entertainment, engenders the necessity of the health-care system to develop new treatments. Unhealthy living gives jobs to prescription drug chemists and lobbyists. Countless advertised weight-loss products depend on it. .It is therefore our patriotic duty as Consumers to eat unhealthy stuff and promote it to the rest of the world. We are entitled to The Pursuit of Fattiness. Wake up, America!.If you want my Twinkie you’ll have to pry it from my fat, cold, dead hand! There, I said it!
In America, citizens were allowed to make their own decisions. Nanny-state USA works like communism- people are forced to behave in the ‘approved’ way.
Remember the 1973 Woody Allen movie, “Sleeper”? The character Miles Monroe, who ran “The Happy Carrot” health food restaurant, was cryogenically preserved and awoke 200 years in the future. The doctors who first examined him said,.Dr. Melik: This morning for breakfast he requested something called “wheat germ, organic honey and tiger’s milk.” .Dr. Aragon: [chuckling] Oh, yes. Those are the charmed substances that some years ago were thought to contain life-preserving properties. .Dr. Melik: You mean there was no deep fat? You can’t be serious. You want the “freedom” to be able to eat an artifical substance that kills you, so you force those of us who care about our health to eat it? When these frankenchemicals are used, the manufacturers don’t make things without it. Unless I go “off the grid,” I can’t avoid them, just so you can not care about your health in any way. That’s like saying if I don’t like the fact that you drive a car ready to explode, I should stay off the road.
I feel that everyone should be able to trash their health anyway they want to. But I also believe that I should not be subsidizing their poor health decisions with my tax money/health insurance premiums.
I don’t like the fact that the government tells me I have to wear a seat belt when driving. I wear one; I have survived a number of accidents without a scratch. I wouldn’t think of being in any car without one. But I don’t think the government should tell me I have to wear one.
How do we get around it? We have all kinds of sensors available to know for sure. If a person is involved in an accident, and it is determined he/she was not wearing a seat belt, insurance will not pay for that driver’s treatment. Simple enough. Never happen.
The idea of saying government is always wrong, so we shouldn’t listen, is just a way of saying: “Don’t confuse me with facts.” I am in no way stating that government is always right, but I am showing how foolish you can be in your desire to ignore anything you don’t want to hear.
As a doctor, I can tell you that trans fats are bad for you. Coconut oil is bad for you. Palm Kernel Oil is bad for you. And Canola oil is artificially made, and not a natural oil. As oils go, Olive is the best, but it ignites at a relatively low temperature. For higher temps, peanut oil is the way to go.
We all need sodium, in minimum amounts. A Chick-Fil-A sandwich has over 1000 mg of sodium. So does a can of Campbell’s soup. High blood pressure, here we come.
It’s funny that many posters who find fault with the number of entitlements our society provides seem to be equally possessive of their right to be entitled to ruin their health any way they want to. Or maybe not so funny.
As I posted last week, it is against the law to manufacture and sell clothing that is not fire-resistant. Where is the outcry? Where is the demand for flammable clothing? Isn’t the government ALWAYS wrong? And what right do they have to tell us what we can buy?

I eat all that stuff proportedly bad for you that doesn’t come from a vat in a factory.Red meat, butter, bacon, sausage, eggs, vegitables often smouthered in some sauce or another, things like real alfredo sauce not the crap from a packet, or cheese and dairy products including whole milk.I’m not overweight, never exercise for the sake of exercise, don’t see the doctor very often, take exactly ZERO medications and have rarely taken any in the last 40 years.I think stuff from a vat in a factory or that comes out of a box containing things you and I cannot pronounce are far worse for you than some trans-fat.
For all of you obese pigs who are complaining about this, you never think of the costs to everyone else of taking care of you when all of your obesity related illnesses start cropping up. Paying for your stupidity raises the cost of my medical care and my medical insurance. So grow up and clean up your acts.
Organic chemistry does get interesting. A few years ago, a book came out on all the activities of carbon in our world, for good, and bad, can’t live without it, and if we aren’t careful, more will die WITH it!
