As a disabled vet, with a son in the same boat ( I was Army and he was Navy- though he never served on a boat!) I agree with the quote attributed to John Paul Jones.
As to the ‘toon though, we who SURVIVED are the ones this day is for, and to those, please, for what we often had to do, and remember forever in our lives, don’t say “thank you”, but rather: “Welcome Home”.
“…..The next time terrorists attack New York City, perhaps we should let them get away with it. …..”.The next time terrorists attack New York City, I suggest going after the perpetrators, not the country with the most stuff to blow up, as preferred by the Military Industrial Complex, or the most oil resources as preferred by politicians, and promoted by Rumsfeld because “Afghanistan doesn’t have enough targets.”
Debt: It has to do with some of the things we had to do, we don’t want to be thanked for, or constantly reminded of, it in fact is part of the syndrome that causes PTSD.
Great strip today – love what you did with the services, but I have to say, yet again, the 5th service was left out. US Coast Guard is part of the Armed Services and actually, was first to ‘take’ Iwo Jima that day. The Marines just had a bigger flag to plant and the photog was there. ;-)
Thank you Michael. I can almost make out my dad (USMC in Viet Nam and Korea), Grandfather (WWI) an Great-Grandfather, who ironically served for the duration of the Civil War, finishing it as a corporal, just as you portrayed!

A well earned WW2 memorial at Iwo Jima. Too bad it is mischaracterised to denote freedom and liberty for just about every military action since.

Too bad it didn’t remain Armistice Day – the celebration of the end of war. But I guess that wouldn’t serve the Military Industrial Complex.
