“Just put it on my EBT Card……… Errr…… The taxpayers tab”.I saw a lady on the news (wearing designer sunglasses and big gold earrings and necklace) yelling at the reporter about not being able to “Get my free food!!!” during the 1 day computer problems.Maybe she should budget her money better and not count on the gov’ment to feed her.
No, the accurate comic would show someone who already made the purchases (appropriations bills already passed), but who decides they aren’t going to pay the credit card bill when it comes in the mail.Meanwhile, Paul Ryan tries to save the day. He’ll trade increases in military spending for some safety net preservation, yet he won’t budge on increasing revenue to pay for his increases. Tell me if I’m wrong, but won’t that increase the deficit?
If Republicans were actually serious about lowering the deficit, they’d propose real cuts to their pet programs in addition to the programs they don’t like. History shows they’re no more serious about deficit reduction than the Democrats. We’ve all seen the numbers for the last 30 years. Both parties have their blame.
I like cutting back on government but up until now I was not supportive of cutting back on the foodstamp program. After reading about this fiasco I have changed my mind.
I defy anyone to defend this rampant looting (Anybody reminded of Katrina?) in Lousiana.
It is the Congress that is responsible for the budget not the Executive Branch. Congress is just not passing a debt ceiling increase to pay for it’s own spending.
I don’t care what side of the aisle you’re on… the overspending must stop! And increasing taxes isn’t the answer; that’s like giving more money to the burglar who took it in the first place.
What Ms. Benson’s cartoon doesn’t show are the items put into that basket going back through the Bush, Clinton, Bush, Reagan all the way back to the first “entitlement” given to any business or group. That basket has a lot of items that didn’t cost so much a century ago, but the interest is coming do. Things were balanced from time to time, but gov’t and corporate/union leaders began "compensating themselves for the difficulties of being responsible for people, either workers, members or the electorate. There is a way to bring balance back to the system. It will take time and “investment” (read “temporary” higher taxes on people who are not directly investing in jobs, people, and/or infrastructure.) It will take a LOT of education and training… for adults on gov’t supports, as well as for students we need to be able to work tech savvy jobs and be able to serve in the military with competence. It will take time, and we are not a patient people. We are however picking our future. We can be a high tech, well educated, happy and healthy people or we can be a people divided by wealth, class, race, and religion, with the poor living lives depicted from books to movies that show our people at a worst we imagine is impossible. Justice by the gun and police unable to go into some areas/enclaves.Scientists, farmers, doctors, CEOs, the military/covert agencies are warning us of threats to which we need to respond with money, manpower, and an educated populace. Now is not the time to stop spending, but it is time to spend with wisdom and greater efficiency/prioritization.Respectfully,C.
If not now, when? After the dollar has crashed and the world is buying oil with the Yuan?First off, Obama has not added more to the debt than all his predecessors combined. Debt was at $11 trillion when he took the oath. It will soon hit $17 trillion. Between sequester level spending & a bounce back in tax revenues, we aren’t adding much at the moment. We don’t want to immediately pull way back on spending. That will disrupt the top heavy recovery we have. We haven’t had a truly balanced budget since the Great Depression. We never paid down the WWII debt, but GDP grew so fast that it wasn’t burdensome. We can’t expect growth to ever match the levels seen during the 50s & 60s… well, unless we manage to destroy the rest of the world’s manufacturing base again. We need to make sure that we don’t repeat the mistake of running large deficits during times of a relatively good economy. Bush added $5 trillion to the debt during a period of growth. Few conservatives seem to have digested that fact. During an expansion, debt should go down as a percentage of GDP. No President should propose tax cuts or spending increases that increase the debt to GDP ration during an expansion.
Ansonia, with Mr. Obama pushing the cart, I didn’t realize I needed to mention him. What I did forget was the elephant running down the aisles for those last minute amendments, earmarks, and other pork spending they usually attach to these self generated “emergency bills”, some of whom come from anonymous sources and were never heard or debated in committee. The donkey in the cart made sure he had his, I’m sure.I have some other disagreements with your statement, but we’ve had those discussions before. If the yuan becomes the world currency, Mr. Boehnor will share a prominent place in history with Mr. Obama and others. There is so much video showing republicans praising the shutdown in gov’t and “happy” to be part of it. There is more of republicans saying that defaulting on our debts will be a good thing and nothing bad will come from it.Yes, Obama and the Dem leadership own some of this, but Mr. Boehnor could have ended this by simply allowing the House to vote on the Senate bill that was approved by 100% of the senate, including Mr. Cruz, the architect of this moment.Even Fox news has ample video of my statements. What did you think about the man who stood in front of the Veterans with Sarah Palin and Ted Cruz and said Obama is Muslim and prays on his knees daily? What did you think about the people standing in front of the White House with Confederate flags demanding Mr. Obama step down without ever mentioning Mr. Boehnor? What did you think of the vets who condemned Republicans who coopted a peaceful bipartisan protest to make it a sound byte for their agenda? Is it alright for conservatives to tell outright lies in order to further divide and frighten people? Or do you also believe that Mr. Obama is a Muslim?Curiously,C.
Your hate prove you have no conservative friends, you can’t even meet one without ranting bigotry, so more libtroll fiction. What hate? What exactly did I say that was ficticious? And, where is ansonia, when someone is making a personal attack?I told ansonia that slashing now would harm the economy. Disagree? You can explain your position as freely as I did. I said we need to shrink the debt relative to GDP, & I’m a ‘libtroll’? Get a grip. This is why the Tea Party will never control the House, let alone the Senate.Go read the Libertarian site Reason’s take on Paul Ryan’s weak beerI’m willing to listen to all sides of the discussion. You aren’t discussing, you’re spouting pointless venom.
