ypoons7666, I think you are correct about “all Conservatives are not Republicans, and that all Republicans are not Conservatives”. However, if you don’t like what Luckovich’s cartoon says, or how it says it, why not simply say so? You might have better effect by pointing out the flaws in his message, than in accusing him of having a “hateful streak”.

As slanted as your observations are, I’m kinda’ surprised that you even read Mike Luckovich. For instance, I NEVER read Mallard Fillmore – it makes my blood pressure too high

@ wmconelly: Democrats oppose non-partisan commissions in states which they control; Califorrnia, Massachusetts, Illinois, Michigan, etc. They are masters at gerrymandering.

I just keep laughing when Republicans complain about someone on “welfare” getting $260 a month, when corporate CEOs or “board members”, are often raking in Government subsidized bonuses of up to $200,000 an HOUR!

Thank you for a polite and reasoned response.

I have to admit a degree of agreement with you. That being said, it is in the nature of cartooning to portray things in simplistic terms. The medium doesn’t lend itself to elaboration.

As for divisive, inaccurate, and offensive, the tone of many of the cartoons to be found on sites like this could be described that way.

As for the comments made by many of the posters, good heavens! It out to be beneath us. I prefer thoughtful dialogue. Some healing and helpful ideas might occur to us.

What’s the Democrat’s strategy to win this?Plan A: Boehner backs down & the CR bill passes the House with bipartisan support.Plan B: Wait for the Tea Party to realize that they aren’t going to set back the ACA (which is happening), & wait for them to figure out more reasonable demands (looks like it will take a while).http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2013/10/here-is-the-short-gop-quote-that-perfectly-defines-the-shutdown/280220/http://www.dailykos.com/story/2013/10/05/1244387/-Rep-Steve-King-We-don-t-know-what-kinds-of-demands-we-re-going-to-havehttp://maddowblog.msnbc.com/_news/2013/10/04/20817596-we-have-to-do-this-because-of-the-tea-party

What Republican is complaining about someone on welfare getting $260/mo.?You’re right, he’s lying. Well… kind of. The average family receiving TANF aka Welfare, gets far less than $260/month. The Cato Institute inadvertently let slip the actual number is about $150/month. You aren’t going to accuse the CATO Institute of using an artificially low number… I hope.<img src=“http://object.cato.org/sites/cato.org/files/wp-content/uploads/housing_starts_vs._swb.bmp” width=“400>Republicans are smart enough to know that complaining about giving needy children $150/month sounds… well, mean. The overwhelming amount of TANF goes to children since the Clinton/Gingrich reforms. Since complaining about $150/month doesn’t sound good, Republicans took every bit of possible safety net spending & divided it by the number of households under the poverty line, and came up with the ridiculous lie that welfare recipients get $60,000/year.The lie:”http://townhall.com/tipsheet/katiepavlich/2012/12/07/poor_households_getting_168_in_welfare_per_day_from_taxpayers">"Poor" Households Getting $168 in Welfare Per Day from TaxpayersThe truth:Insensitivity to human plight taken to new extremes.

Many people are under the false impression our form of government is a democracy, or representative democracy. This is exactly why I can’t take you seriously. Most of us know that we don’t have a true democracy, where individuals directly vote on laws. The founders knew that what briefly worked in the city-state of ancient Athens was unwieldy, even for a nation of 4 million. They also feared mob rule & the susceptibility of people to men who would be tyrants.Madison clearly calls for a representative democracy in Federalist #10:“The two great points of difference, between a Democracy and a Republic, are, first, the delegation of the Government, in the latter, to a small number of citizens elected by the rest: Secondly, the greater number of citizens, and greater sphere of country, over which the latter may be extended.”The Constitution outlined a representative democracy that would be tempered by written safeguards of individual freedom. Our Constitutional Republic is a form of representative democracy.

I was going to write something nice about your good post, suggesting that lumping all Republicans together is wrong. Then you had to follow it up with this silliness. Every elected official has referred to our system of government as ‘democracy’.Ronald Reagan: “Democracy is worth dying for, because it’s the most deeply honorable form of government ever devised by man.”Marco Rubio: " I believe the 2nd Amendment is a cornerstone of our democracy."Ted Cruz: “If you want to talk about something corrosive to our system of democracy, why do you think the American people hold this body in low regard?”And, Rand Paul said, “I’m not a firm believer in democracy."I’m not dishonest enough to pretend that’s an accurate depiction of what Paul meant. Paul was talking about how democracy gave us Jim Crow laws.

“But you didn’t answer my question: “Where does any Republican complain specifically about a person getting $260/mo on welfare?”You can’t lump all Republicans in one group, nor can you lump all welfare takers in one group to make a logical point. Are you fatuous enough to pretend that allegedly excessive entitlement spending is one of the central tents of the modern GOP? Or are you unable to figure out that I said the $260/month figure isn’t what the GOP claims people get? In order to inflame their base, the GOP inflates the amount people get. Here is the broken link. This myth lit up the conservative media & blogosphere, as a simple Google search would tell you.http://townhall.com/tipsheet/katiepavlich/2012/12/07/poor_households_getting_168_in_welfare_per_day_from_taxpayers

Pubs did not come out to vote in the same percentages in their districts as Dems did in their districts, but they still won their districts. Even Barney Frank admitted to that.
