If Republicans didn’t cause the government shutdown, why are they trying to rename it?-If it’s not a bad thing, why are they trying to blame Democrats for it?-And why are Republicans so terrified that Obamacare will be successful?

The only cartoon on which I will make comments today as it reflects my own opinion. Both parties are making money off of blaming the other party and the nation is being further weakened and divided as per Geo. Washington’s warning.^Ansonia, you asked me the other day why I keep blaming the Republicans when the President refuses to negotiate.I have listened to the news for days and I’ve heard no negotiation points from the Republicans except to defund or delay the ACA. They are “negotitating” to fund the gov’t services their base wants, but mostly in order to make the claim that the Dems won’t negotiate. My wife is off of work and we have three months of income. Like most of those furloughed, we don’t know if she’ll get retroactive pay or not, but from what I’m hearing from Republicans, they are hoping to ‘fund" the shut down with the money they aren’t paying 800k workers… many of whom are in worst shape than us. Congress IS getting paid, and doing nothing. The President is only just now doing something, and sadly, it’s the only thing he can do since no Republican is willing to risk the RNC’s wrath by cooperating with this President on ANYTHING, not even on things that were first introduced by Republicans in previous administrations.Negotiations would be if the Republicans came up with an actual counter offer instead of “give us what we want and we’ll end the shut down.” If I heard them saying, “give us the keystone pipeline, and we’ll end the shut down.” or, “do immigration reform our way”, or “give more tax cuts to the upper class” or any other statement than… defund or delay a law that passed and is moving forward, I’d believe an effort to negotiate was taking place.I do not like the ACA as it is written, but I know people it is already helping. A true negotiation would be for a bipartisan committee to sit down with healthcare professionals and people using procedures and methods that are already showing results to draft a new and better ACA.The lack of civility and respect has even reached my Facebook page. If it is the goal of people to cause hate and anger and keep neighbors from talking about ways to fix things… it’s working. And those who are throwing fuel on the fire and using insults and hate instead of ideas and logic are part of the problem, and making solutions harder to find. With great sadness.C.

At MacDill Air Force base, many civilians were working 4 days a week because of the sequester. Now about 1500 are without pay. They buy houses, cars and groceries when they are working. How is this terrorism of government shutdown helping.

Perhaps because the presence of the cat is keeping the mice, and some rats, away? There is an office of auditors who have saved the gov’t over 100 million dollars in the last three years being kept away from their offices. A neighbor of mine is part of a company that repairs navy vessels in foreign ports. His employees are on per diem AND not allowed to do their jobs. Are these people unessential? And doesn’t this give a chance for the mice to run wild?Out of 800k workers, there is going to be a small percentage that are a waste of money, all businesses have slackers, but calling 800k workers whose functions and purposes you don’t know “non essential” is unkind and hard hearted. I hope you never need a gov’t worker to help you with an attitude like that.Regretfully,C.

Thank you for the link, Skeptic.I saw the words, in the event of an extended shutdown, used a few times. In the other cases, considering what Republicans who want the ACA killed or the gov’t closed, want… it could be worse. However, YOU were the one who called 800k workers non essential. The link only shows some of them. This is unnecessary. People are being hurt so the one program this president has been able to pass will be shut down. I have opinions on why, but no matter… it is wrong, and it has NEVER happened like THIS under another presidency. Even when I disagreed with a president, I recognized his right to experiment in the four years to eight years he had. Why can’t you?Respectfully,C.

What is a presidential term if not the electorate’s permission for that president to show what he can do for the nation and its people? To offer ideas on which Congress can make adjustments or set aside for the betterment of our people. There have been Presidents so incompetent or even disabled within their term as to warrant their resignations. Wilson’s wife was the de facto president after his stroke. Warren G. Harding, Ulysses S. Grant, Franklin Pierce, James Buchanan, Zachary Taylor, Millard Fillmore, and others are part of a worst 10 list offered in 2007. None of them left office. Only Mr. Nixon ever stepped down and that was to avoid impeachment and only Mr. Ford’s pardon of Mr. Nixon protected him, and the nation, from greater embarrassment. As far as Mr. Obama’s skills go – I have been angry about the many concessions he made at the beginning of his presidency in an effort to reach out to the GOP. Romneycare, the Dream Act, permitting guns in national parks, and other acts were Republican ‘wants’. But from Republicans we heard McConnall’s declaration, before any leadership/management skills were offered to make Obama a one term president. A South Carolina congressman yelled “You Lie” during the state of the union. The constant attacks on his birthplace, his right to BE president, and other issues that attacked the underpinnings of his administration and immediately set the tone we’ve seen for six years. I have grievances with how the Dems conducted themselves during this time, but it has been the Republican extremists who have caused our nation to lose it’s triple A credit rating in the world and tried to run the gov’t from one election to another in order to be able to take over when they ‘won’. They did not win the senate, they lost seats in the house, and Obama won the election. The Republicans refuse to compromise and are, at this time, attempting to restart the gov’t one department at a time. The ultimate goal is, first – make the Dems look bad for not making exceptions to the shut down, and second – restart every part of gov’t but healthcare. If anyone should step down, it is the legislators who have chosen the tactics of insults, division, and pettiness, it is the Republican and Democratic extremists and career politicians that have set the tone for our current state of the union.I find myself skeptical of your reasoning, sir. I would like to know more about your own understanding of our nation’s history.Curiously,C.
