    Remember the Studebaker Avanti c. 1965? My high school buddy called its styling bold. It was too “radical” for me but it would fit in well today.

    The winner of the award for “the most ugly cars by one manufacturer” has got to be AMC. The Javelin, the Matador, the Gremlin, the Eagle… I sure do miss them, though. I’ll take ugly over boring any day.

    @JPuzzleWhiz, Gotta tell you about the old car I saw Saturday: It was nicely painted yellow with a black top and was the same shape of a 1950 Ford only much smaller. I thought I saw, “Packard” as its factory ID in cursive. I met the owner and he said it was a Panhard, French, 1961. He popped the hood and it revealed a 2 cyl. horizontally opposed, air cooled motor mounted by its exhaust pipes. It had a 4 spd. trans with a steering column shifter with floorboard clutch and brake pedals. Also it was front wheel drive, with rack and pinion steering and independent suspension. He said his only complaints were that the rubber seals around the rear window and trunk had deteriorated, that the electric windshield wipers didn’t work and he couldn’t find out how to operate the horn or if it worked. He was its third owner and said that he could find replacement parts in France at a reasonable price. He said that about 260 were sold in the U.S. and estimated that only 20 were still being driven. I learn something new everyday and that day was a lulu.
