Val: Ooh! They have duck confit! I haven't had that in years.
Phil: And poached salmon...with pesto!
Val: What about you two? Ready for an epicurean adventure??
Val: They'll have cheeseburgers.
Went to a fancy French restaurant in NYC with my wife, my brother-in-law and his wife. We men ended up ordering Kobe steaks. So much for an opportunity to try something new.
This will probably be the first time they’ve actually had good hamburgers, instead of greasy precooked fast food slop. They’ll never set foot inside McDonalds again after this!
My girls would order burger and fries ANYPLACE. We once had a Chinese restaurant in a tizzy because they just plain didn’t have it in the kitchen. When the girls each turned 18, hubby would take them to Haussner’s (a very fancy, no longer in business place in Baltimore) and he threatened to walk out and leave Eldest daughter to pay the check if she ordered “the usual”.
When growing up, Dad would occasionally take the family out for dinner at the fanciest restaurant in the city. My little brother would always order “a hamburger and a chocolate milkshake”.
It’s all in how you raise kids. From when they were babies, I always fed them different things, and now my kids will eat (or at least try) anything. One of their favorites is octopus, and my oldest loves sardine sandwiches. I never understood why you need to give toddlers chicken nuggets or buttered pasta. That stuff is easy to like. Give them veggies and flavorful food, and that will be normal to them.
Whenever I go to a restaurant I always order the same thing. Liver and onions (and bacon if they have it). Love it and can’t get it at home. Usually drives the other people at the table crazy, though.
My parents would take me to all sorts of restaurants. The only stipulation was that I had to eat whatever I ordered—if I didn’t—the next time we went out it was either a hamburger or hot dogs ! ! Also, we usually would be with business associates of my father so I was to be on my best(normal)behavior.
On vacation in Baja California, my friend’s children weren’t too happy at the “foreign” foods on the menu. So they ordered something American, the taco plate. :-)
NOOOO! :( Try something new for xxx sakes! parental boasting warning my kids (12 and 16) went for a chicken mango salad and veal cutlets in Paris last summer and loved it. Then again we make all sorts of things at home and the rule is: You have to taste, if you don’t like it then only the one bite, then they can have something they like. Then next time we have it you have to taste again. Eventually they get to like all sorts of new things. My kids will eat (almost) anything. (parental boasting done, sorry all :þ )
When I eat foods with certain spices as seasoning, I can expect to get very sick during the night, and do, unfortunately. Can tell by the taste what I’m in for.
Local gourmet ice cream shop has some delectable flavors: lemon/blueberry, bourbon butter pecan, wheatgrass (looks awful, tastes great!), and another fruited flavor I can’t remember made with a locally brewed ale!

I too would like trying the duckcomfit…never had it. What doesPhil’s new position involve?

Wouldn’t want to pay loads to “try something new” either unless I was somewhat certain I would like it.

I won’t roast duck at home but it is one of my top favs when eating out, along with lamb.

I’m surprised with the lack of adventurer’s spirit in Alix, that is quite out of her usual self.
