So is Tantor bilingual since he can understand the language of the great apes as well as, obviously, the language of the great elephants? Lucky for Tarzan he was able to team up with such a learned elephant!

I used to see Mambas cross the road when riding my motorcycle in Peace Corps (there are green ones, too, very pretty and very deadly). The locals thought they were sorcerers who could take serpentine shape.
Both type of vipers you mention are thick bodied, with small “horns” above their nostrils. The snake in today’s strip has a long, thin body and no “horns”, no extended hood therefore no cobra…..sorry tribemate, but it has to be a black mamba! :)> KnowYourSnakesAGowa!!
All I know about this type of snake I learned from a buddy who served in the South Pacific during WW2. He stated he and some buddies were swimming (off duty) one day when some poisonous snakes showed up between them and the shore, He claims he ran all the way to shore on the surface of the water.

True of Indian cobras — unfortunately, NOT true of mambas, taipans or tiger-snakes.
