Make a fist, count the knuckles and the dip between each knuckle starting with the knuckle closest to your thumb. When you get to the pinky knuckle you count it twice (July and August) and back toward the thumb. Aka knuckle 31 (jan), dip 28 (feb), knuckle 31(march), dip 30 (april), knuckle 31(may), dip 30(june), knuckle 31(july), knuckle 31(aug),dip 30(sep), knuckle 31(oct), dip 30(nov), knuckle 31(dec).

Growing up, I never liked that “poem” — the meter and rhyme are all off. I liked this one better:

30 days hath September,April, June, & November. All the rest have 31except February alonewhich has 28 we find, and each Leap Year 29.

But that one isn’t even among the many on the Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thirty_days_hath_September .
