This happens to me all the time Mr. Dougherty! I work at a retail store (Macy’s) wear a red apron that reads ’Macy’s’ and a nametag with my name and not ONE person approaches me, I go to Wal-Mart, Target or any other store I don’t work at and EVERYONE asks me where stuff is!
I once asked for something in a Home Depot and was told that they didn’t have any. I would have seen it if his head hadn’t been blocking it from view. Found it later on a second trip along that aisle.
If you’re out of work, dress like some store’s salespeople, go to the store, and refuse to help people. People will insist you be fired and the store will have to hire you so they can fire you. Then you can collect unemployment.
I saw an episode of TED Talks where a performance artist got together about a hundred people, dressed them all in khakis and blue pullover shirts and got them to go into Best Buy (one at a time about three minutes apart so they wouldn’t be noticed). Management was not amused and called the cops who came and said “tough luck, they haven’t broken any laws”.
If it wasn’t the clothes then it would have been all those years working behind the register. I swear it rubs off on you when you work in retail. I’ve been free of jockeying a register for six years now and I still can’t go into a store without someone asking me if I work there.
It’s equally annoying when you’ve just got into the store and before you can start looking around, someone asks, “Can I help you?” .Come the time when you do need help, nobody’s around!
Never walk into a Trader Joe’s wearing a Hawaiian shirt.In fact, given what they’ve become, corporate-wise, best to never walk into a Trader Joe’s at all.

I often get asked questions in stores, I don’t work in retail; but have difficulty turning off my customer service.
