Not at all. The entire NSA program started with the premise: “We don’t need no stinking badges.” It was wrong then, and was made “legal” through congressional and procedural shenanigans.
Once the powerful realized that all they needed was a court order from a secret court that gave a secret order, law was removed from the equation, because the ends justified the means, giving the program the appearance of legitimacy.
And if the program is allowed to continue, I am quite sure the next president, regardless of party, will take it to “the next level”, the definition of which will be “wherever I damn well want it to be”.
The program should have been stopped years ago, and now is a really good time. Now, am I still a liberal, or can you admit that we don’t always have to be polar opposites? It’s one or the other.
We have done it to ourselves. We didn’t pay attention to what was going on because we were more concerned with the letter at the end of a politicans name ( D or R) than we were in what they were actually doing. Because we chose to worship parties and allow them to become career politicians, we screwed our rights and freedoms to the floor to be stomped on. “However [political parties] may now and then answer popular ends, they are likely in the course of time and things, to become potent engines, by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government, destroying afterwards the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion.”
