I think you are mixing two definitions of the word fear. 1. To be afraid and 2. to be in awe of. If I had fear 1 of God, it would change to only hating God. Definition 2 draws me towards God. Many religious people use definition 1 to control people. Spiritual people use dfinition 2 to inspire people. I prefer to believe God wants companions, not slaves.

One of my favorite quotes.I repeat it to myself everytime I go on a raid or do a tactical assault to apprehend a violent subject or just in my daily “boring” traffic stops.I then do two deep breaths and turn go in.I do recommend in her case taking some firearm lessons. Men like him tend to come back.If he does? Send him back in a body bag.Never allow yourself to ever be a victim.

This Zen Pencil should be published for all women who have ever been abused can see it, copy it, and use it as inspiration to leave their abuser and get the help they need to get beyond the abuse and return to a more normal life.

Let’s train young girls in the martial arts so that they can defend themselves. My brothers were given karate classes, but no-one thought of giving them to me. Ballet instead… not so great for fending off unwanted advances and blows. I would have used a few kicks and chops over the years to defend myself. Violent, stalker deranged types will come back when released…to exact their revenge. Women have been victims for far too long

I have loved this litany since I first read it in the early 80’s when I read Dune. Poetic, and true. Great depiction Zen Pencils. Deeply disturbing and necessary. If you are in an abusive situation there is always someone who will help you, and you don’t have to become unafraid to find them – do it scared if you have to.

The thing about abuse of this sort is that it eats the soul, the mind and the heart in a way that assault by a stranger does not. It absolutely has to be faced so you know it has nothing to do with you and everything to do with the abuser. The only way for the poison to pass out.

Thanks everyone, I’m really proud of this one. I’ve had domestic abuse victims get in touch with me after they read this comic to say that it helped them – it’s the best compliment one could receive and reinforces the power that comics can convey. – Gav

I left him in 1975 without causing him to go to jail (he did that for himself later after moving to Florida) but he was there only briefly for shooting someone in the hand, because of overcrowding. I never let our 4 kids see any more than they had to, so they were surprised that I expressed relief at his death. They are now in their 50s.

I have a zero tolerance for ass-whoopin’ from anyone -male or female. This has never happened to me (thank God),but I’ve always told my friends and relatives that if it did, they’d know where to find us both: me:in jail; him:the hospital, either in emergency,or the morgue. ’Nuff said.

Ummmm… I don’t get it. Are the interstitial panels a flashback or a flash-forward? If a flashback, it’s too late to face her fear since she’s either dead in that last panel where he’s being arrested or the source of her fear has been taken away. If it’s a flash-forward, what exactly did she face? Is she mentally projecting that this guy she just met is an abuser? In that case, she’s creating her own fear, not facing it. And then facing an on-coming wave is a really bad idea. Not only can a wave of that size knock you off your feet and unconscious, the back surge can drag you into the ocean, conscious or not. As a metaphor for fear, something truly dangerous is not exactly the best choice.

I’ve heard it than when the man has lost it all and has nothing to loose, he’s the most dangerous and most likely to kill. Like the cop posting said earlier, “his type always come back” I just sent this to a college classmate with the same comment, and it it makes me feel much better remembering that she has several types of black belts.

If you are a child and the abuser is your dad, and your mom acts like you don’t belong, then that is hard too. I was a cutter by age 12, but didn’t know that anyone else did this. Anyone who cuts feels All Alone.

No Liam. She survived. I love this as a girl. I must say, never let a man hurt you. Just do a carefully executed chop to the temple. BAM! Out cold or stunned.
