I’ve followed Mr. McDonnell’s political career since he became my local representative to the House of Delegates. I rarely agree with his politics, but he has always seemed to be honest and above-board, and not hypocritical. I am surprised to see the volume of evidence against him; I thought he was smarter than that. Even accepting the principle of innocent-until-proven-guilty, he has put himself into a compromising position in terms of ethics; whether illegal or not, the appearance is not attractive.
The particular “Democrat Rags” that have mentioned Mr. McDonnell for VP or President material include the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot, The Charlottesville Daily Progress, the Lynchburg News and Advance, the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the Washington Post and the Washington Times. Oft-quoted political scientist Larry Sabato has mentioned this several times in his writings. All papers mentioned above, except the Washington Post, are very conservative newspapers, with the Times-Dispatch being just to the right of Attilla the Hun. Charlottesville is a liberal city, but you wouldn’t know it by reading the Daily Progress.Mitt Romney made a few trips to Virginia during his presidential campaign, and Mr. McDonnell was always intentionally a part of the entourage.
You are right about Mr. Cuccinelli. He has gone on record as saying that oral sex should be illegal even between consenting married heterosexual couples. He bullied the state health board into not modifying Virginia’s new abortion-clinic law regarding hospital standards, which seeks to close clinics by forcing them to make physical modifications which no other type of outside-of-hospital medical clinic is required to do. The hope is that the changes will be so expensive that the clinics will have to close their doors….same legislation that has caused the stir in Texas recently.
The board of health has the right to review those regulations and change them as they see fit, (subject to restrictions), and they indicated they thought some of the law’s requirements were overly restrictive. Mr. Cuccinelli (called “Cooch” by his buds, in the same clueless way the Tea Party called itself TeaBaggers before they found out there is a street definition) told the members that if they voted to change the regulations, he might not be able to defend them in court if they ran into legal difficulties as a result of their governmental duties, which would be a definite dereliction of his duties as Attorney General. It worked, though, so he’s a happy guy. Mr. Jackson, running for Lt. Gov, has been cited in today’s paper for filing his campaign finance papers in violation of state law for the second time since he was nominated just last month. The circus continues.
Unfortunately, the Democratic candidate for governor, Terry McAuliffe, is as wildly liberal as Mr. Cuccinelli is wildly conservative. Many of us were hoping Bill Bolling, current Lt. Gov., would run for Gov, but Mr. Cuccinelli outmaneuvered him into the nomination. Mr. Bolling is that rare animal: a moderate Republican who knows how to work with others without animosity.There was a great hope that Mr. Bolling would run as an independent, but he has chosen not to, primarily because he has been advised he’d need at least $10 million to have a chance. I don’t blame him, but I do blame the system that keeps us from having a reasonable person at the controls just because of fundraising issues.

He recently was named to the Executive Committee of the Republican Governors association, which is a common step for Governors looking for a national platform prior to running for President.
At actual McDonalds the company now pays its workers with fee-based debit cards and probably gets a kick-back from the bank issuing the card. In effect it has found a way to reduce its employees’ wages without appearing to do so.
