On a fire in Southern California, we had a 180 degree wind shift as we were going into a fire. In the chaparral, that fire turned and ran, covering over a mile and a half in the time it took us to run about 250 meters up a ridge to cover across a fire break on the crest.

If you’ve ever had a fire “crown out” over you, you know how things like this can happen, but are among the lucky ones who escaped with your life.

Having spent years in fighting wildland fires, it’s part of how I’ve observed the on the ground impacts of anthropogenic climate change, and seen that it’s real.

We need to honor the firefighters who lost their lives, THANK YOU, STEVE, but if the country continues to refuse to acknowledge the science, fact, and danger of what we’re doing to the planet, things will only get worse, and the sacrifice WILL be more lives, not just money and “possessions” they’re out to defend.
