When I first saw the trailer for Pacific Rim I thought “I’d love a good Gozilla-type movie. But fighting the monsters with giant robots? That’s just dumb!”
Maybe Pacific Rim will be fun…I WANT to like the idea, but just can’t get past the “stupid” factor. We have armaments that can plasma-burn holes thru a foot of armor, but can’t poke a hole in a lizard? A nuke-tipped drone couldn’t be put in a giant mouth or eye? If you have to build a robot, why not build it twice the size of its opponent, instead of equivalent? Why not something that clamps on and delivers a nuke or shaped charge? The list just goes on and on, & I have problems with plots that don’t follow a logical path in addressing the purported problem.
Lots of targets move; they can still be hit, especially with good technology. What the heck is “flint steel”?…Anyway, there’s not much of anything that couldn’t be severely damaged with a large armor-piercing HEAT munition or a nuke. Much cheaper & easier than giant robots. Are they going to go with the “it absorbs all energy” trope?
In any case, it sounds like the early reviews are generally good, so maybe there’s hope!

The problem with the Godzilla/Transformers/Giant Robots line is they completely ignore the Square-Cube Law. (Look it up.)
