Only one mosquito? Did you ever notice that in Hemingway’s Big Two Hearted River, Nick Adams only has to deal with one mosquito in his tent before he goes to bed?? Anybody here ever been in the UP at dusk? Yup, just one mosquito…Right…..I can only conclude it was a joke….He really did know the area…Yup. One freakin’ Mosquito, UP….

UP? What’s that? And, no, if there is one mosquito there you’ll have at least 10. I was so smack happy one night, the neighbor came exploring to see who was trying to break into our house.

Wasn’t so much mosquitos as No See’ums that had me up much of the night during certain summers overseas and keeping score of how many I knocked off each night (there were always plenty more). But I’ve danced Monty’s dance. Never had the deus ex machina of an insect poster to deal with, though….

Spent some years in the UP at K.I.Sawyer AFB (closed now). Venturing into the backwoods was bad. Found that Alaska could be much worse. Had to run to escape the gathering clouds. Window screens usually had 10 or so hanging on the outside hoping to get in.

As the tour guide on Mackinac Island says " there is not one single mosquito on the island." Tourists look dumbfounded until he continues, " they’re all married. "
