Hock shops are a real education in retail markup, if you haven’t done wholesale work before. the worst is furniture, followed closely by jewelry. The sofa you bought for $800 likely cost the store 60 to 90 bucks. That $3000 bridal ring set? about $800 max. The best you can get from ANY store for used jelelry is about 25 cents on the dollar. Furniture? Give it to a thrift store for a tax break—it’s usually worthless.

OK, I admit it, it took me a few seconds to get the joke…

Looks like the pawn shop owner has a pacifier in his mouth. So, Roger seems to think a “TourneyPro II” chess set will make him a better player, the way he thinks a better golf club will make him a better golfer. Next, I suppose, he will take up photography so he can spend ever more money hoping a better camera will make him a better photographer in the same way great pots will make you a better chef.

FYI, furniture markup at retail stores is about 85 or 90 percent over wholesale cost. What item is surprisingly thin on profit is cars; dealers only make 2 or 3 percent on most models.
