Panniers (steel or whalebone cage underskirt supports) added width to an upper-class woman’s hips (like ANYONE needed to add to their hips, BAH!) Normally worn by the upper class women until the lower classes and servants insisted on wearing them (through hand-me-downs and general fashion). Housekeepers were notorious for sweeping bric-a-bracs from display tables and contests between women over who would walk through the doorway first….
