I don’t think that’s a watch band Hairy Hercules is sporting. It’s some kind of Shazam power band that he bangs and turns into some sort of super hero (or possibly a winning coach since this is a sports strip).
My guess is those thugs were a couple of Gil’s linemen. After seeing them get their a**es kicked by an old man, I don’t see a trip to the playdowns in the Mudlarks future.

Hairy Hercules was the professional name of a guy Gil had wrestled back in high school. I think he appeared in the strip in the early 1960s
