I know that drill — all too well! “As long as I’m down here, is there anything I can do for you?”

Every day this strip shows something that I’m going through. As regards today’s topic, I remember when I could leap onto my feet from a supine position like in martial arts. If I tried that now, it would be martial “smarts”!

I’m in this situation right now. I’m recovering from a hip replacement. Only, I can’t put weight on my knees yet. So I have to scooch across the floor on my butt!

I wouldn’t have even gotten down there with the kid because I know I’d never get back up. Nope Nelson we will sit at the kitchen table!

Heck, by the time I even got down on the floor, coloring would be over and the kid would be off doing something else. Never mind getting back up.

On the very rare occasion my knees have a reason to be on the floor, I carry a pillow to place under them and close to something sturdy to use for getting up. I try not to drop anything important or anything that can’t be kicked under a rug or bed.

Yoga is the answer—not a perfect answer by any means, but the best I have found. And, with a little self-discipline, you can do it at home with a DVD so it is almost free.

I sympathize. With careful study over several years, I have found that emitting loud sympathy-inducing groans, grunts and moans—and the odd yelp or two—helps the getting-up-from-the-floor process considerably.

Yoga? The arrogance of those who won the genetic lottery. My Neurosurgeon said with my “disaster of a spine”, that trying yoga would paralyze me …..

Yoga would seem a useful strategy for those who are up to it still – No grandchild could induce me to the floor, but I groom the hounds on the floor. The Big Boy is helpful about getting me up, but it’s the computers I can’t get away from. I do go out of my way to avoid crawling under desks, but once in a while it can’t be avoided …

    I hate computers.

filhodeangola: It should be more focused, along with getting up (or attempting same) – like a kyi.

I have arthritis in my hips and legs so bad that I’m now on disability. The last couple years I worked in a bookstore, and every time I got down on my knees to work on the bottom shelf I basically had to climb the bookcase to get back on my feet. After a while I leaned to take a deep bend at the waist and avoid getting down.

The last time I was on the floor (I fell), I had to squirm my way to something I could use to get up (my knees hurt too much to crawl the way Earl is shown crawling).

Oh, the getting up from sitting on the floor. It is NOT a pretty sight. One must just grin, and ignore the stares of others. And bring a folding chair next time!
