Not all fun being a locavore. JJ didn’t show the part I did all freakin day today, the #$% weeding!!!!! We only grow heirloom varieties, Brandywine and Cherokee, yum! Makes it all worth it.
Well, there ain’t nothin’ in the world that I like betterThan bacon and lettuce and homegrown tomatoesUp in the mornin’, out in the gardenGet you a ripe one, hey, don’t get a hard one
Plant ‘em in the spring, eat ’em in the summerAll winter with out ’em’s a culinary bummerI forget all about the sweatin’ and diggin’Everytime I go out and pick me a big one
Homegrown tomatoes, homegrown tomatoesWhat’d life be without homegrown tomatoesOnly two things that money can’t buyAnd that’s true love and homegrown tomatoes
Now you can go out to eat and that’s for sureBut it’s nothin’ a homegrown tomato won’t curePut ’em in a salad, put ’em in a stewYou make your very own tomato juice
You can eat ’em with eggs, eat ’em with gravyEat ’em with beans, pinto or navyPut ’em on the side, put ’em in the middlePut a homegrown tomato on a hotcake griddle

If I’s to change this life I leadI’d be Johnny Tomato Seed’Cause I know what this country needsHomegrown tomatoes in every yard you see, yeah
When I die, don’t bury meIn a box in a cemetaryOut in the garden would be much betterAnd I could be pushin’ up homegrown tomatoes
Homegrown tomatoes, homegrown tomatoesWhat’d life be without homegrown tomatoesOnly two things that money can’t buyAnd that’s true love and homegrown tomatoes
Husband kept a vegetable garden for many years. He finally figured out that the vegs he was “saving money on” cost us at least twice as much as buying them at the market. In addition it all came in while we were on vacation and once his dad died and could no longer come and harvest (for himself) while we were away, it all just fell on the ground and rotted. We did not have much in fresh vegs as there was so much when we could harvest that it would all have to be frozen anyway to keep.

I love the locavore season in MI…the too short time we get veggies that have taste.

There wasn’t enough room for what she really thought. “Or just loco”.

The first tomatoes are the smallest, and it might be a good size for that variety.
