about 13 years ago my daughter was cleaning out a flower bed started yelling about a snake. I know I had seen a small grass snake a few days before so I told her to leave it alone, and went to move it. I looked and didn’t see the snake so I asked her where the snake was, she pointed to the dirt at the edge of the bed and all I saw was an Earth Worm……I remind her of that at least once a year, every year. lmao.
I once caught a large black snake in the cabinet beneath my kitchen sink. I took it down the road a ways and freed it. A beautiful and totally harmless animal.
Had a counselor beat a rattlesnake to death at summer camp one year when I was 10 (he had young kids, and was taking no chances). We ceremoniously decapitated it with a shovel to make sure it couldn’t reflexively bite anyone, my lovely cousin picked up the head with her fingers and buried it, then her brother skinned and cooked it. Tasted like chicken!
Out on an archery range one early spring we almost stepped on a six foot rattler. He was just out of hibernation and very sluggish. We poked him with the stabilizers on the bows until he finally moved off the trail. We were in HIS backyard, but didn’t want him to bite someone else.
“IF the snake eats stink bugs, or rabbits, or deer, or mice , he may slither up and down my legs all day..He will be safe with me…”-I’m a live and let live type, but if I come across a snake which eats deer, he ain’t welcome on my legs. He might still be hungry.
“Too eager to kill instead of living with the rest of Nature. The human way and it is flawed.”-Humans have flaws?Whodathunk?Still, if you want to eat your vegetables, you probably want the insects and other critters who also want it to be killed so you and your children don’t starve.
My then 2 y.o. daughter found a snakenext to the fence one day, it was about 6 feet long and BIG, I ushed my fearless daughter back inside, and looked it up and it was likly a hognosed snake and as we had a ground squirrel problem, I chose to keep the child in rather than drive the snake out. .Last week my now 6 y.o. saw a TINY rat snake at grammy’s house and about woke the dead with her screaming.

I can’t believe Janis wants to kill a harmless little snake … she’s usually soft-hearted about creatures.
Why not have Arlo carry it off to a field or even a less manicured part of the yard, if there is one?
