Inaccurate cartoon. President Obama has always been in favor of surveillance. Voted in favor of GWB’s warrantless wiretapping bill as a senator and has been expanding his listening powers ever since being elected.
It was the Bush administration that put this legislation into effect. They simply turned 911 into a good reason to spy on all Americans. The only thing we might fault Obama with is that he hasn’t done away with all that paranoid crap which doesn’t do a thing to make us safer.
It’s a surprisingly good cartoon; too bad the TPers don’t get it. Imagine this – within minutes of identifying the Tsarnaev brothers, the FBI may have had a complete list of all telephone contacts. This led to a rapid roundup of their associates. On that basis, the conclusion is ‘Yes, we must do this!’ On the other hand, is maintaining a list of common contacts for all people in the US a violation of the 4th Amendment?
On the other hand, think how handy a slight extension could be in apprehending a serial offender – bank robber, rapist, thief. Instead of call records, simply build a database of what phones are communicating with each cellphone tower. And from there you have information on where every cell phone (and presumably it’s owner) is at any time. Clearly a violation of the 4th Amendment.
Obama campaigned on promises to stop the “spying of American citizens.”He lied. He got votes because of this lie."scandalous! from now on presidents should be impeached and convicted for not keeping all their campaign promises. how you think that would fly?
