In heaven, there ain’t no beer. That’s why we drink it here.
Reynard61: “Archie Bunker in Heaven?! snerk Like that’ll ever happen…”
He softened a lot in later years (although “Archie Bunker’s Place” was a mere shadow of the show “All In the Family” was). Or don’t you believe people can change?
Archie was sexist & racist, but he was human. He had good qualities, though they were seldom on display. The constant theme of the show was that he could learn & evolve… usually in as grudgingly funny a way as possible. That’s what made “All In the Family” interesting & funny. Jean Stapleton was nothing like her Edith character, but she realized Edith had to be patient, kind, loyal, wise & more than a little oblivious, in order to make her marriage to Archie believable. Hopefully people will remember her for more than being the “dingbat”.
@ fritzoid: Unfortunately I never got to see AITF after about the middle of Season 3 or “Archie Bunker’s Place”. If Archie Bunker “softened”, I hope that he at least did a better job of it than a few other “ex”-bigots that I’ve known.
@ 4my10851cs: Where in my comment did I mention Carroll O’Connor? I know the difference between the character and the splended actor who played him.
