    Actually strips of old cloth that would otherwise be discarded were commonly used before the advent of toilet paper.

    I think Grandpa had a very rough childhood. Of course, if I had grown up when outhouses (privies) where the common sanitary facility, I might be a bit sore about certain memories myself.
