For those who read Lynn’s note — At her latitude, the horns of an evening crescent moon always point left, and of a morning crescent point right. It has nothing to do with date or time zone.

this is sweet, young families today have so much going on that mom and dad often get lost in the shuffle. I think this is sweet but considering their age I would not have left the kids alone to go around the block, maybe to the end of the street and back or just sit in the yard and enjoy the quiet.

National Togetherness Day? Valentine’s Day? What – one, maybe two days to celebrate being together, to celebrate love? I don’t THINK so! My beloved and I celebrate every single day – almost every single moment – that we’re together. It’s still a rush and the magic is still there…

Don’t mean to nit-pick, but in the interest of scientific literacy, need to point out that the earlier post about which way the evening crescent Moon points is not quite right!

Even from the same location in the Northern hemisphere, (i.e., same latitude), the evening crescent Moon can point mostly left, at an angle left upwards to the sky, or even straight up! And that does depend upon the time of year!

In the Southern Hemisphere, the pointing is indeed reversed, to the right.

When we’re talking about the morning crescent Moon, however, the directions are reversed. So, where the crescent points also depends upon the time of day!

    For an explanation see: http://starchild.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/StarChild/questions/question43.html

I REALLY don’t like the ’let’s leave those annoying kids on their own for a while and sneak away alone" theme to this one.

One interesting item: this entire strip takes place early in the morning, no more than a couple hours before sunrise. Should Elizabeth be up at that time of night?

What nonsense. My parents left us alone all the time, at home or at hotels. Nothing ever happened and we learned to be fine on our own. And that was before cell phones or any other phone, for that matter. In cases of emergency we knew to get the neighbors or some other adult.Nowadays, if we disconnect our 11-year-old students for two days from their phones and their parents, they have a panic attack…

@antiquetracmanYours is a popular attitude today, but could not be more wrong. Parents are afraid to leave children at home, so they take them from that safe place and strap them into the car when they are running errands. And the car is the most dangerous place a kid can be.@potrerokid1532You are right that kids were safe back then. But the truth is, they’re even safer now. It is media sensationalism that has led us to believe that we have to overprotect kids.@Pugnowand@Adele Derwaldhave it right. In fact, our overprotective approach to parenting today is doing more harm than good. See http://works.bepress.com/david_pimentel/11/

I don’t think so. Not unless it’s a very large block.

Childen don’t dissolve when they are not actively supervised 24/7. They actually learn a lot of useful things – and back when Lynn was doing these strips, we hadn’t yet been indoctrinated to believe otherwise.

We were all much better off before the hysteria merchants wrested control from the thinkers, and that goes double for kids.

This is not a bad thing for Lynn. You never can measure how many yards they have walked and still are aware that the children are safe. There are other worse comic strips that need to be scrapped off because they teach kids that cussing and violence are good humor. That’s thet shame on them.

Husband worked with children in a mental health program. If a child under 12 is left home alone or with younger children for any length of time it is considered to be child endangerment, even though if asked publicly child protective services will say it varies by the child. My sister in law leaves her daughter, now daughters home alone while she goes for a run and cannot understand how dangerous it is. The older girl is now 11 and the younger 3 (just adopted) but this has been going on since the older one was maybe 4. The older one is a very babyish 11 and should not be home alone, let alone with the younger one to watch. There are no neighbors even for the girls to go to. Technically the mom is running on their property, but it is a dogleg property and she is running the driveway to the street and the driveway is 3/4 of an acre. The running is unneeded as she also goes to the gym 2 hours a day.
