In my gran’s case, we found out that the smell was lack of basic hygiene. She honestly thought after about age 70 that she never got dirty. Her idea of washing her hands was dabbling her fingertips under the tap, with no soap…and she had worked in foodservice for years. A “bath” was wiping down with a wet washcloth, again no soap, because she never got dirty. When she came to live with us my mum nearly had kittens; she said “I never thought I’d have to give my own mother a bathing rota!”
