This is just one more violent contest between Shiite and Sunni. It’s been going on for hundreds of years and will continue as a struggle for power. In the name of peace and to give them an opportunity for democratic rule we have fought and died in the middle east in conflict after conflict. The unfortunate reality is: they hate our country and resent our interference. This ideological/theological conflict will continue regardless of our interventions and (IMO) we would do well to leave them alone to their own devices. They rationalize these blood baths as the quest for a divine right to power. Fine, leave them to their own devices, we are not any longer capable or responsible to be the policeman of the world.
As Gore Bane so succinctly put it, no one hates war more than the soldier. For those that survive they are faced with a lifetime of dealing with both the physical and emotional scars of war. So Mr. Bane (and the other vets), thank you for your service.
Adrian Snare, when you say “I say NO weapons……and NO extremism,” that is a noble thought, and a cause to work for, unfortunately it is not shared by either side of the conflict in Syria, nor has it been practiced in most of the other countries in the middle east.
In the mean time there still is no good course of action on Syria, the rebels are too tainted with extremist elements and would be projected to make life even more hellish than prior to the civil war if they should gain power. More stable elements are fragmented throughout the umbrella that is rebel groups
Assad isn’t any better.
Rather than try to give military aid to the lesser evil, how about we give food aid. The price of food has skyrocketed
The UN is running out of money to fund refugee camps on the boarders, this is a major factor in the predicted war casualties and exiles.
If the USA gets stuck in Syria at the cost was near the trillion for Afghanistan or Iraq, you could literally buy every Syrian a plane ticket and a home in the mid west.
Turkey and Jordan both say they will take more refugees if they can afford it, that said the cost of processing can be a few thousand a person. Total cost 40 billion. In Jordan it would exceed their yearly GDP.
It might be noted that only a minority of the 1.5 billon Muslims live in the MIddle East, or are involved in the “Arab on Arab affairs” GHW didn’t want to get involved with, nor the Jewish/Arab argument over land both (rightfully actually) claim.
The majority of Islamic folks do NOT call for violence against America, or anyone else. The Quran is no different than the Torah, or “Christian” texts (That proclaim the ONLY WAY to “God”, is through Christ, all others go to Hell forever!)
BTW, reading last night the memoirs of Thomas Jefferson regarding the lead up to the Declaration of Independence, and a rather innocuous sentence was there, noting that “infidels” are anyone NON-CHRISTIAN, which happens to also be the first definition in today’s Oxford English Dictionary.
