And it could be a near “Freudian”, too (I at first took it as just a “dad tactic”)…. He’s at the crossroads, and it seems he started thinking out loud, and wants to show he trusts his daughter, as he must’ve realized that she got him home in one piece, despite his worrying….it would sound like he’s saying he’s ready, though he’s also speaking over top of the subject of dinner…..

My mom use to worry about me doing things that I hadn’t even thought of. Made me wonder what she was like when she was young. Maybe not the pregnant virgin she wanted us to think she was. I’d tell her, we could “do” before midnight what she thought we would “do” after midnight. No time limits.

Geez, Frank, overall Luann’s proven herself pretty responsible. And so has Quill (not all teenaged boys are lecherous). Besides, they told you where they’ll be, and it’s only for awhile.

I don’t know, I think Luann is pushing it. What’s wrong with the living room? Why does she need to invite Quill into her bedroom right under her parent’s noses? But since they were previously allowed their privacy for hours in Brad’s room to make their recordings, I guess this is no different….

Luann is responsible? Trust her? I’m sorry what strip do you all read? First of all trusting a teenager about sex is like trusting an alcoholic with a bottle of whiskey. They may intellectually agree that it’s a bad idea to drink it but it doesn’t mean they will abstain. Second of all I wouldn’t put it past LuAnn to sleep with quill in an attempt to mark her territory for when he is alone with Tiffany. How many girls tell themselves " if I don’t sleep with him he’ll go to someone who will."

“Trust” is not a value. It is something that is earned by maintaining values and avoiding compromising situations. Luann’s announcement is a flat statement that she is not to be trusted.

Frank is being realistic here. Although he didn’t see what almost happened in her room last year, he did see how Luann clung to Quil, how Luann was dressed (barely), and how Quill looked at her. Has Luann earned his trust? Not yet.*Hope Toni stops by for dinner so she & Luann can have a heart-to-heart talk. (How many months passed between Frank & Nancy’s marriage and the birth of Brad?)

Frank, back off a bit. And that crack about not getting into drama camp was totally uncalled for. Yes, Luann had ulterior motives for wanting to attend, but she was taking it seriously. And honestly, the alternative (Luann spending the time constantly on edge about what Tiffany is doing with Quill) is worse in my mind.

I registered for this website as I had a student talking in my class over media content. We had a lengthy discussion over escapism and how the internet plays into that false sense of security. We also had many laughs at most of the comments, and not in the traditional humorous way.

I can safely say, that if you are actually comparing a 30 year old comic strip in every day life then you are in desperate need of separating yourself from internet.

Luann is fake. The characters are fake, the stories are fake, everything about this comic strip is supposed to be funny not give you that release of escapism. Please seek help from your local therapist.

To all those who are saying that dads are overprotective of their daughters because of what they themselves were like at that age, I have this to say: First of all, I know how parents can worry about everything that goes on with their kids, but if dads are worrying about their daughters with boyfriends because they know how boys can be, then some things need to change. First, we need to stop rewarding boys (and men) for having sex with as many willing females as they can, while we still demonize girls who only want to go as far as kiss a guy by calling them sluts or whores. Secondly, parents need to sit down with their sons and let them know in no uncertain terms that they need to take a girl’s “no” seriously if she doesn’t want to have sex yet; in other words, teach them that “no” means “no.” Third, they also need to teach boys, as well as girls, that sex is a beautiful, precious thing that should not be used as a reward, punishment, or dare. How many times have you all heard of guys who will have sex with a girl(s) just to prove their “manliness” to their buddies? And of course, they should be taught that sex is a serious step that should not be taken until they are mature and ready for it.

Now, humankind being what it is, I know that what I’m laying out here is a pretty tall—if not impossible—order, but I don’t think I’m wrong to say it.

AMEN Leviticus. I love reading the comics because its my escape from reality for about 3 hours until Dinnertime. In high school my all time favorite TV show was the Incredible Hulk (and still is I have some episodes on DVD.) That also was my escape for an hour on Friday Nights at 8 PM. We all know its not real life and that’s what it is just ENTERAINMENT like going to the movies.

@lebannen- You actually aren’t an instructor, you couldn’t be and not be aware of the fact that entertainment is designed to draw people in and create that suspension of disbelief that makes it ‘real’ to us. If you read the huge uproar over the hit show ‘Game of Thrones’ , the ‘Red Wedding’ scene, you’d know that good entertainment creates an emotional stake in viewers and readers that make them care. You go on to say you mocked us, which shows the lie of your claim of professionalism and occupation. Troll, pure and simple. We know the difference between reality and fantasy. We also know that good fantasy contains elements of reality to strengthen the illusion, and that these elements may rightly be commented on and debated. We’re just having fun, but you are the one that can’t see what is happening here. Go away, if you can’t be polite and respectful you aren’t wanted.

“While I doubt they have called Quill a hunk in casual converstation between them”^On the strip from 12/6, Frank also called Quill a “hunk”, in conversing with Nancy over Lu and Quill’s late night conversations… other than that?…. I guess it wouldn’t seem to come up too often, even with some of the others Luann has been with… they probably look at Quill as some “statue”… especially Nancy, as you say….

Such a statement is possible if a man is talking to his wife/girl friend. For years my wife has referred to Tom Selleck as a hunk. Now if I see a show staring him getting ready to come on, I will say, “Dear, the Hunk is coming on TV.” Frank was talking to his spouse. While I doubt they have called Quill a hunk in casual converstation between them, the same principle can apply^^Maybe , but, you were only repeating what your wife already said. Would you have called Tom Selleck a “hunk” on your own, if asked by a male friend, to describe him?
