On further thought, maybe Janis is ironically turning the point of the Lone Ranger joke on its head — that is, maybe she’s grumbling that SHE, not Arlo, will inevitably be stuck with the gift-buying chore. (And frankly, why not? She doesn’t have a job, does she? Or a kid at home.)

Kerumbo: What makes you think that she doesn’t have a job? We know almost as little about that as we know about Arlo’s job. Seems to me that you’re operating under the male chauvinist default mode: If we don’t know, we’ll just assume that she’s just a li’l old housewife.By the way, isn’t it Arlo who always does the cooking? So why not assume that he’s the one who stays home?

Sound familiar. Then on the way there I have to ask my wife the names of my first cousins spouses and kids- last names etc.

kerumboJanis does have a job. Remember the inappropriate fax that Arlo sent her 10-15 years ago?

She used to work for a realtor several years ago. Occasionally Arlo wears a tie and goes to an office, no idea what he does there.

Janis had a job at one time. I do not know if she still has it. In fact…you do not see much of Arlo’s work life anymore. But yes the reference is to the old Lone Ranger and Tonto joke. Janis is acknowledging that she will likely be the one buying the gift.

That is one of my favorite jokes!

Lone Ranger: Tonto, we are surrounded by Indians.

Tonto: Why you say “We” Kemosabe

    Great one today Jimmy!!!

Just buy a few gift cards online and have them shipped to the graduate. Easy peasy.

Thanks for the tips on whether Janice has a job. I was not making any rude assumptions about her, I was trying to remember ….and could not come up with any recollection of Janice at work. I’ll have to check “Beaucoup A&J,” which I proudly own but have not gotten around to reading!

This is something I never understand – graduation invitations or announcements. It must be regional. In our area (LI, NY) one gets 3 tickets to graduation – high school or college. One does not invite anyone but immediate family unless one can find someone who is not going and can get their tickets then you can invite grandma or grandpa. Not even aunts and uncles are invited. SIL and my youngest sister graduated from schools in NYC – husband and his parents went to SIL. My sister – my other sister, mom and me went (dad is dead). Are invitations to lots of people common elsewhere?
