Bankruptcy does necessarily not equal death. What GM wanted to do was restructuring. And even if they went under, it’s a pretty good bet someone else would have taken advantage of the equipment and plants.
Everywhere else in the world governments give their businesses support so that those businesses will have profits on which to pay taxes and use those profits to hire their citizens.
Here in the US we give them tax loopholes to avoid paying taxes on their profits and encourage them to move their jobs to other countries.
