I’m with Elly. What’s wrong with trying to look respectable for a trip? Grandma will know exactly who he is and she’ll be impressed that he’s trying to make a good impression. He has PLENTY of time to be a kid and dirty himself up again.I’m so over people wearing pajamas, old sweats, flip flops, etc everywhere. Whatever happened to dressing nicely and respectably for things? Yes, if you’re at home or exercising or doing manual labor, wear whatever you want. But we have a generation of people who think wearing flip flops is acceptable for a job interview or for going out to a nice dinner. Yuck – have some class!! (And I wasn’t even born when people dressed up to go on an airplane trip, so it’s not like I’m nostalgic for my youth.)

A lot of boys are clean these days because all they do is play video games, my youngest son included. He doesn’t like the kids in my neighborhood, every once in a while he’ll go outside with his sisters but he doesn’t get dirty.

First of all, in my defense, my go-to extremely reliable source for any and all things t.v. and movie-related, IMDb.com, says John Wayne died of both stomach AND lung cancer. Who’s to say that his stomach cancer wasn’t caused by his smoking habits? According to webmd.com, smoking and drinking (both of which he was famous for) can increase your chances of getting it so just in case there’s ANY chance at all that that’s what happened to him . . . I think I’ll just go ahead and stand by my statement: “It’s too bad he had to smoke himself to death.”
Second, the movie you’re referring to where approximately 41% of the cast and crew came down with some form of cancer was 1956’s “The Conqueror” — not 1949’s “She Wore A Yellow Ribbon.” The movie was filmed in Utah — not New Mexico. His female star was Susan Hayward — not Maureen O’Hara. And the director was Dick Powell — not John Ford. The only thing you had right was the fact that all three of those people (along with approximately 88 other people) later developed various forms of cancer [most likely, people think, due to radioactive fallout contamination from recent U.S. government testing in southeastern Nevada (shooting for “The Conqueror” was east and generally downwind from there in southwestern Utah.) This info I found on Wikipedia.] NOW who needs to catch up on their “Duke” facts?
This may be pure non sequitur, but did you know that the most common cancer suffered by smokers is actually bladder cancer?
This is not to say that all, or even most lung cancer is caused by smoking. Asbestos exposure results in more lung cancer than smoking does, though of a different type. Imagine how much better things might be if the millions spent on ‘proving’ the risks of second hand smoke (yes, I’m cynical) had been used to clean up the environment, instead of instigating idiotic red herring arguments re Global Warming/Climate Change to divert attention from the pollution in our food and water.
And with regard to smoking and health in general, I’m still trying to figure out why kids in my generation and the generation preceding us who were mostly raised by smokers appear to be living longer and with better health than people today who were raised by non-smokers, and whose exposure to ‘second hand smoke’ has steadily declined since the seventies.
Could it be we are being sold yet another pup on this? The question I would ask is: Cui bono? Who benefits?
We seem to be seeing patience and long term planning, or at least intent, I think, on the part of Big Pharma. While looking into the possibilities of ‘vaping’ as opposed to ‘smoking’, I found the results of several studies involving nicotine. It seems that researchers have discovered that nicotine is not only an exceptionally powerful (and toxic) drug, but that it somehow seems to simultaneously calm the brain while increasing alertness. I’d say that this is probably what has induced so many people over the years to embrace it, knowing that smoking was also probably impairing their lungs. However, control of this very useful drug has always been in the hands of the user. I’m pretty sure BigPharma and the government want to deprive us of that control.I believe that the purpose of the push to criminalize smoking is tied to the potential value to Big Pharma of nicotine. And, of course, in finding yet another segment of the population to criminalize arbitrarily. Got to keep those Corporate owned prisons full, don’t we?
