Val: Can somebody help me clip the dog's nails?
Val: You hold, I'll clip.
ERK
Val: OK. Plan B...
Holly: How many legs does this dog HAVE?
FLAP FLAP FLAP
Never have any trouble clipping the cat’s nails, but the ONLY time our dog ever bit anybody was when we tried to clip his nails. Now I just make sure he walks in the tarmac in the park, and that wears them down.
We have to trim our cat’s nails…I sit on a chair and he sits on my lap with his back to me, and hold his back skin with one hand and his “arm” with the other while my husband clips. The cat fights like a wildcat.
Surprisingly, the cat that hated me, let me clip his nails, but the cat that loves me won’t let me touch his feet. But nobody can touch his feet. Luckily he keeps his own nails short somehow. The dog thinks it’s the greatest thing in the world since he gets treats after! ;)
When we had cats, my husband generally did a good job of it, with me helping some. Have mercifully blurred on the details.BTW, I’d like to recommend that you gentle folks check out “Candorville” and comments today. Very moving and uplifting.
That’s why it’s worth it to me just to take the dog to the vet to get his nails clipped. They do a better job and a lot of times they do it for free. And they can do it in a couple of minutes
Mine all let me do their nails, but I believe that is because I’ve got over my freakiness about clipping their nails. Even knowing this was so, it took me a while to get past it.
Cats shed their nails (into your furniture, if you don’t have that dealt with), so rarely need them clipped. I’ve had cats whose nails, as they aged, didn’t shed cleanly, but … those cats let me clip their nails. One of them would lie on her back in my lap while I did it .. lol!
I always make a point to handle my animals’ feet – dogs, cats, whatever. If you handle them regularly, it helps when you need to cut nails or treat a wound … If they are older, or have had some sort of trauma it takes patience, but if you do it a little bit every day, it’ll come. Dogs which can ‘shake’ are pretty easy.
FWIW, often groomers will clip nails free, too, sometimes even if you aren’t a really regular customer. Only fair to be a regular customer, though, if you need nail services :-)
I started using a cordless Dremel on Moxie when she was just a pup. Do a little each week. She’s so used to it now she nearly falls asleep. As long as she gets her treat when we’re done, she’s happy.

Had that trouble myself when used to having cats.

Me too. It had to be me holding the cat wrapped in a towel and my husband clipping. Didn’t work in reverse.

Towels don’t work. I stuff my cats into the sleeve of an old sweatshirt . Works great. Trouble is, now they are afraid of sweatshirts….

If you start while they’re still kittens they let you do it without too much trouble. They still squirm but they’ll let you do it.
