I read an article (I think it was more like a blurb, in Reader’s Digest) that said 46 states no longer require students to learn to write using cursive writing due, mostly, to the lack of cursive writing in general (I still write cursively at times, but it lacks artistry when I do).

I’m dating myself, because when I was in school it was called script or manuscript writing, I didn’t hear it called cursive until my kids went to school.
We are homeschooling my daughter and have only recently found out that cursive writing is no longer considered essential in public schools. The reason why is because of the word processing programs and other such activities on computers require the use of keyboard skills instead.
I, too, was instructed extensively in cursive writing in school. As an engineer, however, I was required to learn to write on drawings using block letters. My lettering became almost like typewritten words. Then came computer-aided drawing. No need to hand-letter anymore. I stil use block letters when I hand-write anything, except for my signature, which is extremely legible.(There ya go, simpsonfan2)

I am proud to say I learned how to write cursive by using the Palmer method. Still get compliments on how clear and readable my handwriting is.
