This has nothing to do with being gay. Knute isn’t Gunther’s date for the prom — but Gunther can’t exactly ask Rosa for dance lessons now, can he?

To kauri44….my uncle carried schrapnel in his back his entire life from the battling he endured in the Phillipines…he never spoke about it. If we asked he would change the subject, I know he killed and it bothered him forever as he was deeply religious but felt he was doing his duty to his country. He was one of the finest men I ever knew and I miss him. He died in 2001 he was 88. Thank you for your kind comment.

Rats. Erased my comment. Again.Better Rosa, would be a bonding for them, with a romance, and a sweetness to it. Or Luann, she would help. His Momwould be more appropriate than Knute. And last but notleast are professional dance lessons. That is why they have dance studios.

Actually, the “slow dance” has always been the “tricky part” of the whole dance experience…. the whole two left feet, being up close with your date… the whole “which way do I go” and “how long IS this song” kind of deal…

Plus, when there’s fast songs on, the lights seem a little brighter, and you can use that time to schmooze and fill up on punch so that you can have enough sweat during the awkward “slow dance” part….

    Hey…. whose old-fashioned cookie-baking mom is that?

Gunther’s is in a wheelchair, and I always figured Knute’s would be more offbeat…he doesn’t seem like the product of a traditional upbringing.

We so seldom see any parents besides the DeGroots.

Well, maybe Rosa can wear some cute little gloves with her prom dress. I kind of wish Gunther would ask Rosa to teach him to dance. If she knows how, it would be a bonding experience, if she doesn’t know how, they could learn together. It is fun to see Knute can’t handle a little teaching stress when he’s such a trouble student himself:)

Still, it’s nice to see Knute knows how to slow dance, it’s kind of consistent with him and the ‘gentleman’ strip not so long ago where he said his father passed on some traditional manners and possibly skills to him. At least he offered to help Gunther, even though he’s a terrible teacher, they are friends after all.

This is Gunth’s mom. She was only in a wheelchair when she injured her foot. She is a good lady, neat mom, she raised Gunth alone,.did a very good job. But Gunth was lacking a male role model.

How can you equate two friends trying to learn how to dance, so that the one friend can be a good date for his hot, very female, girlfriend to the prom with something called the “gay movement” whatever you think that is? I am sorry but your comment is unfortunately both ignorant and homophobic.

Most High Schools have a ballroom dancing as an elective, along with other types of dance classes. I went to my daughter’s Prom (she is disabled and her date and his parents went also. We all had a great time!) there were a number of kids ballroom dancing. when I was in college, ballroom dancing was a very popular class. Think Dancing with the Stars.

Why SHOULDN’T Gunther ask Rosa to teach him how to dance? Rosa probably likes that Gunther is a guy who’ll admit he doesn’t know everything and, if nothing else, she’d learn how to anticipate what he’s going to do on the floor (right or wrong).

And trying to help Gunther seems like something Knute WOULD do. Knute’s a slacker, but I don’t recall him ever doing something to hurt anybody and he’s always appeared to have a solid streak of decency.

We already know that you have a very low opinion of Luann, so naturally you conclude that the primary item of importance to her about a boy is how he looks. Nothing to do with sharing interests, right?

No clue re nerdy mashers, maybe a cad or a bounder, though – but I will tell you this: Greg is still the sole author of dialogue. And he’s still way too busy to scour this forum. He wasn’t up for any awards this year from the National Cartoonists Society, but he and his wife teamed up for some hilarious moments during the awards presentation in a couple of categories.

The G-man is blessed that he has such a good friend! Sometimes, often times, even a father can’t/won’t teach his son to dance! For a fatherless boy like Gunther, Knute is performing a real service— Knute gets two points in my book!*P.S. How many of you guys went to a big dance, with a date, without actually knowing any steps?

I think part of Gunther’s problem around girls is he had no father to guide him. ^Yes, that too… Though some fathers don’t necessarily have it in them to be a ladies man, either…

My husband’s mom sent him to cotillion when he was in secondary school, but he couldn’t seem to get the hang of it. When he went to MIT, a girl said that she WOULD teach him to dance, so she tried. The moment of truth came when she told him he had to move in time to the rhythm of the music, and he said “Rhythm?” . . . What’s rhythm?" He never could figure that out, and we never danced. He has many good qualities other than that, though.

What ballroom dancing? The box step is a basic dance step for slow dancing – at proms, weddings, etc… For some, it is not easy to master and, unfortunately, no longer taught as part of PE in schools.

I told him everything I did, then we tried to determine what the exact opposite of that was, and that is what he did. Worked out pretty well for him^Good Plan! ha ha…. —One other factor that makes it a challenge for some, is the “trying too hard factor” … I’ve come to learn over time from being taught and from personal observation of others’ dealings, that things just have to happen naturally, in dealing with girls….

He reminds me of a sign that used to hang in my high school electronics lab: “No student’s project is completely worthless, it can always be used as a horrible example.”^Sad truth,…. At least you learned to not copy the bad.. it’s sad that some out there experience the whole “those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it” thing…-For me, my father left out when I was a child, but the crazy thing is that he actually came back to my mother when I became a young adult… naturally, he missed the “teaching” phase with me, but he came back to make amends and make good, and not just in the “mechanical, perfunctory kind of way”… there are sticking points, but he’s done good, so far for many years now… so many of them don’t even bother to look back….

I graduated in the late ‘60s, and the last month or so before the Prom, we had dance lessons. Those few weeks (once weekly) were hopelessly inadequate, and I’ve really thought since that had they actually taught us to dance, many of us would have enjoyed not only that prom, but life in general more.

I am not much of a dancer, but on the odd occasion where I have had the opportunity to dance with someone who did know how to dance, I very much enjoyed it. That works out to about three dances over fifty years or so.

I’m talking about actually dancing to music; not what my father referred to as ‘why dance?’. My father was an astute man; he also said that dancing was ‘the vertical expression of a horizontal desire’.

And so it often is. rotfl!
