The skull indicates that she may also try something on her own, rather than just relying on luck.

I’d really like to hear Sister Wendy’s take on this one.

I’m not sure which is more creepy… the skull, or the baby head on the shelf.

Many Spanish religious kept skulls around to remind them of mortality in the Middle Ages. Don’t know whose skulls they were using, but then what with the Plague, infant mortality and all I’m sure they had plenty around.

Click-to-enlarge image can be found here. Smaller enlargement can be found at Mr. Melcher’s blog entry. An Old Woman Praying (not to be confused with this) isn’t among the 71 European artworks shown online by its current-location. This partially-obscured, taken-from-the-side, click-to-enlarge image, is number 12 in the slideshow presented there. It is described in 3 pages of an online book, starting here. The artist‘s Wikipedia page and collection (more under Subcategories).Second, of the 3 works, by this artist, that have, so far, appeared in Mr. Melcher’s blog, to also appear here. The Second link points to the prior strip featuring a work by this artist. @Baslim the begger, a frequent contributor in the first months of this strip, left at least one comment there that has been deleted. In fact, as far as I can tell, all his That Is Priceless comments have been deleted. If he (or she) is reading this, I hope you’re well. I miss your contributions.
