It’s not just Boston. The craving for instant media is toxic for quality journalism and facts are pushed aside to make room for opinion and beliefs.

NPR provided excellent coverage of the Boston Marathon bombings all week long, right through live transmissions of the final capture of the younger bombing suspect. THAT was broadcast journalism, not the self-important and jumping-to-conclusions gibberish of CNN and other news outlets.

CNN blew it multiple times. FoxNews blew it. I won’t even discuss the unspeakable New York Post. Some of the local broadcasters were admittedly overexcited, but did a better job than I would have expected.Once it became “we’re looking, we have nothing to report,” you could have just put a scroll to that effect and gone back to other news.

I don’t watch Fox, so I can’t comment. I do watch CNN sometimes, and by and large they are pretty low level. Mostly I watch CBC — they have some very good reporters.
