REX MORGAN: Are bagels and lox less fattening than fried clams (something I would never eat due to my dietary laws)?Although lox is a “Jewish” food (actually, Ashkenazi Jewish, and I am Ashkenazi, not Sefardi) I never acquired a taste for lox and I don’t eat bagels because it has more starch than a simple slice of whole wheat bread. My weakness in the realm of Jewish (Ashkenazi) food is cheese or potato blintzes. When it comes to Sefardi food I love hummus, tehina and baklava.MARY WORTH: Tom just proved it: he desires Beth’s company more than he desires her ability to cook for him.APT3G: The governor is more interested in LuAnn than the LuAnn’s art program.

Arye, I hate to admit it, but I don’t have the foggiest idea what you’re talking about. Have you ever tried a peanut butter and jalapeno sandwich? My own invention!

JUDGE PARKER: If the Clearings are really “bringing hope to countries around the world,” and poised to “save thousands of lives,” why hasn’t there been some human-interest media coverage? MARK TRAIL: C R A A S H

MARK TRAIL: this looks like a CRASH! on the ground, not a SPLASH! in the water.

Rex – June is not watching her diet or being careful with money (which she said they need).Judge Parker – The man who invented the Segway also invented a water treatment device but you don’t hear much about that either. Too expensive. Also my church has learned that anything has to be something that the native people can help build and feel ownership. Otherwise, the whole project can be sabotaged.A3G – The governor isn’t interested in ART.Mary Worth – Beth must now realize that he is interested.Phantom – He’s firing his gun rather freely (which seems uncharacteristic), but the other guy has a bigger gun.

@DAVID: I had thought that everyone knew about Sefardim and Ashkenazim, so, to get off subject: There are 3 ethnic subsets of Jews: Ashkenazim (“im” indicated plural in Hebrew – the “in” in “seraphin” is a derivation of this), Jews who came from Central and Eastern Europe; Sephardim (I prefer to write "Sefardim), descendands of Jews expelled from Spain and Portugal in the 1490s; and Mizrahim (Hebrew for “Easterners,” include the other Jews (Syria, Iran, Central Asia (Bukharim), etc.

All these Jews have adopted many of the customs and culinary habits of their host countries, as long as it fits into Jewish dietary laws. In many cases, bcause of migrations and sunsequent intermarriages, these groups overlap. For example, a popular surname among Turkish Jews, who are mostlly Sefardi, is “Eskanazi,” since some Russian Jews (i.e. Ashkanazi) have settled in Turkey hundreds of years ago.

Ashkenazi Jews from Eastern Europe spoke Yiddish, basically a German dialect, mixed with Hebrew and Slavic, but written with Hebrew characters. Sefardim spoke Ladino, an Iberian dialect, mixed with Hebrew plus the language of the host country and originally written with Hebrew character. Other Jews spoke Judeo-Arabic or Judeo-Farsi and some Jews, from Iraq and Syria, actually spoke Aramaic. Until Hebrew became the official language of Israel, Yiddish was the predominant language of the Jewish diaspora and, in the US, many Sefardim use Yiddish words in their everday speech (shlep,, for example).
