If it was the fuel pump, the car wouldn’t start. To ensure that you don’t damage your fuel pump, keep your gas tank above the quarter mark and change the filter when necessary.
You can buy a hand-held device to read out the codes, but sometimes the indicated problem is the result of another problem. It is useful anyway, and I keep a code reader in my car.
