The Dolphins paid $4.7 million for a special election to try to get $289 million to renovate Sun Life Stadium. That is just too crazy for me.

You’re not a Floridian (or a US Football fan), are you? Morin writes for The Miami Herald..For once, @Rockngolfer, I agree with you since I no longer watch football.

As a Browns fan, I had to watch Art Modell bitch and moan that the Browns NEEDED a new stadium. The fans didn’t vote for one because, quite frankly, we loved Municipal Stadium. The old “Mistake on the Lake” was the definition of home field advantage, with the frigid Lake Erie winds pouring in over the bleachers (the “Dawg Pound”) making it impossible for southern and western teams to compete at their best. For less than half of what the new stadium would cost, the old one could have been updated. Also, Municipal Stadium had a seating capacity of nearly 89,000, and usually sold out, where the planned stadium had a capacity of 45,000 to 55,000. We new ticket prices would have shot up dramatically to pay for the shortfall. Of course, Art took his team to Baltimore, Cleveland built a new, smaller stadium anyway, and now we’re getting ready for our 14th annual rebuilding year. I actually left Ohio the same year the Browns did, so the fact that I usually see only 2 or 3 games a year on tv makes their current struggles a little easier to take.

Living in Denver, we’re still paying sales taxes to build the stadium for the millionaires… and the old stadium was fine and had as many seats, but not so many luxury boxes. Do you think more luxury boxes are any help at all to the people who funded the stadium? New rule: if sports teams are allowed by the US citizens to keep monopolies in their industry (which they are, as you’ll find out if you try to form a new “competitor” team), it should be a felony for them to use that monopoly to extort money from taxpayers.
