I recently learned that mammalian saliva is mildly antiseptic, which answers my long-time question why people don’t die of horrible diseases after tooth extractions. It also explains why animals lick their wounds. On the other hand, I just learned that cat bites are more likely to get infected than dog bites because cat saliva contains something that breaks down tissue. Interesting stuff, spit.
