@Pacopuddy, you’re absolutely right. Glad that you remembered the sandwiches.

In the book the postman the hero ponders on the fate of those survivalist people who became the very first target of the hords of survivors trying to find food and weapons.

How about, when society rebuilds itself, we don’t have any pets (especially of the ‘languishing in a cage’ variety), but instead take better care of each other. Then we can have a well-cared-for citizenry as the benchmark of a healthy society. Big ‘boo hoo’ for the gazillion-dollar, house-pet supplies and veterinary services businesses. Don’t get me started on dog and cat poop.

I wouldn’t want to live in a world without pets.

@Kathy MarieMy pets don’t languish in a cage and get plenty of exercise. I also pick up after them. Perhaps it isn’t the pets, but the loser owners you should take issue with. And we have dance around goose poop in the parks.

There is a good case to be made that we wouldn’t ever have had a civilization if it hadn’t been for dogs. Dogs made it possible for us to hunt more efficiently and faster, which allowed us to stay in an area longer and develop simple agriculture.

I wonder… if we shared this world with other sentient species peacefully, would we still have pets? Do we seek out companionship outside our species for any specific reason? Random thoughts.
