That’s it, exactly. A bully who picks on someone their own size often meets their Waterloo.

Calvin has been dealing with Moe since a very young age. Here’s one from the third month of Calvin and Hobbes.Click here: Calvin and Hobbes (January 30, 1986)Actually, Calvin’s age never changed — he was already six at the beginning. But he and Moe look smaller and younger in the early strips.

Click here: Dilbert (November 7, 1989)This Dilbert strip is 24 years old, drawn by Scott Adams back in the days of Calvin and Hobbes. (I wonder how many young people today know what data diskettes are.)Note that the last panel contains two punch lines, similar to many Calvin and Hobbes strips. Also note that the second punch line is spoken from outside the last panel, to the right. This is similar to many FoxTrot strips.

@orinoco womble: And if he was a bully during high school, then those years weren’t very good for him either.

@drewhollan: Not everything in Calvin and Hobbes is intended to be comical. Bill Watterson treats the subject of bullying very seriously at times. Click on my name to see my favorite Calvin and Hobbes strip.

@AwakeningBlue: Or maybe it’s representative of how we all sometimes suffer during a congressional recess?

    Nah.

Hobbes wonders how many young people remember diskettes. I wonder how many remember when both Apple and DEC used cassette tapes. Non-compatible too—Apple used analog and DEC used digital format. I once bought a DEC 10meg hard drive that was the size of a refrigerator.

drewhollan I agree. This is not something to see in a comic strip. We sadly see to many teens killing themselves over bullying. Instead they should depict Moe getting his just desserts and the bullying stopping

60% of boy bullies grow to become criminals involving assault, robbery, and rape. 40% are repeat offenders. Victims are unable to cope in society and some turn to drugs to escape. Bullying is a real probl

@Hobbs – your first cartoon reminds me of an expression I am fond of, “Avoid agruments with men carrying automatic weapons.”

I remember punch cards that had to be stacked just so in the machine. Which is where we got “Do not fold, staple, spindle or mutilate!”

On a different tack, Moe’s argument reminds me of C.S.Lewis’ argument that an absolute morality exists: even the criminals object to being punished for crimes they did not commit, or to police brutality. They may do the same—but they recognize that it is wrong, and object when others (who are supposed to act morally) treat them as they treat their victims.

P.S. I too recall the early days of computing: using a teletype console to connect to the computer at another school (since no one school could afford their own!), and a few years later using a TRS 80 with the cassette drive for data storage. Again—it belonged to a school, since poor students still could not afford a whole computer! Even a four-banger calculator cost $50 or $100.

I think all bullies should have their arms and legs broken. That should stop the bullying.
