It’s a fact that women often marry down.

@SUSAN NEWMANKim came to the country as a baby as the last Vietnamese baby airlifted out of the country and adopted by the Rosenthals.

Susan, You probably are thinking of a different character.

According to Wikipedia (which jibes with my recollection): Jewish-raised Vietnamese orphan (the “last orphan out of Vietnam”), geek and Mike’s second wife. Dropped out of a program towards a Doctorate in Computer Science at MIT because it was “too easy”

So Kim didn’t need Mike to realize the American Dream.

Maybe the slave-factory worker was Honey?

I remember baby Kim’s adoptive parents being excited about saying her first word and wondering which Vietnamese word it would be and she said, “Fr.. fr.. french fry!”

No, Honey was introduced as Chairman Mao’s interpreter. Supposedly, after his stroke, she was the only one in China who could understand him. When Duke became the ambassador, that started their long running relationship.

I think the memory of a a slave factory worker comes from Kim’s cousin, who was the only living relative she could find when she returned to Vietnam.

Some good ole American saturated fat and salt will fix that problem.

many places around the world, they don’t marry for love, but for economics, status, power, arranged between families. even one is a 7, and the other is a 4.

One of the reason’s I got married (one of them, remember) was to have a roof over my head.

Mike! Drop the iPad and get a eye full of what is right in front of you! Sheesh! Talk about your dream come true. Scroll over that a few times. Nice drawing today Mr. Trudeau. Kim is looking good!

Wow, I somehow went all these years not realizing Kim was the same person as that adopted Vietnamese kid. I clearly recall the raisins/shrapnel episode. I must have been not-reading the strip during a key period in between. Thanks for clearing it up for me.

I think you might be thinking of Honey, Duke’s one-time “assistant.” Or is she Chinese?

I can’t recall the Vietnamese infant and raisins, but I seem to remember that later on, Kim was going with this fancy-pants guy (a Frenchman, maybe actually in France), but for some reason she decided to go with Mike. Remember that Sunday comic in which she came up to Doonesbury’s window and Alex was looking at her, then Mike was? It was very dramatic, but got fuzzed up in my memory.

Does everything always have to be about politics, or twisted into a political attack, or in some way end up insulting the other party? It’s disgusting.
