That’s the part I don’t get — Obama tries to govern from the center, and gets called a Kenyan socialist. Which, of course, it total horse-pucky, and no conservative can actually point to anything radical about what he’s done. You make up crap like he hates capitalism, or supports death panels, or wants to take your guns, none of which is remotely based in truth. If it’s not about race (though you won’t say it out loud), what accounts for all of the lies and distortions of his record?

@swr and trustedmechanicI have an advanced degree in politics (international law and political history) and swr is clueless about the history he claims to understand.of course since I do have a degree, and I am educated in the subject (and have continued my education through travel and examination of primary sites and documents throughout the world) SWR may dismiss my opinion out of hand. Republicans at all almost all levels of office waste time on legislation to restrict marriage. House Republicans wasted tax dollars trying to defend DOMA. More & more Republicans are realizing that this is an issue that ultimately costs them more votes than it gains.I think helping others gain freedoms & rights that I enjoy, makes my freedoms & rights even stronger. Unless you buy into the religious arguments against same sex marriage, there just isn’t any point in opposing it.

The smoke screen started in 1996 when the Republican Congress passed DOMA, and took what had long been a state issue and made it into a Federal issue to mobilize part of their base in the 1996 elections. Clinton could of vetoed the bill but he didn’t want to give the Republicans a wedge issue in an election year, so he signed it.Bush used gay marriage as smoke screen in 2004 so he wouldn’t have to deal with the real issue of the war in Iraq. Gay marriage was probably the deciding issue in Bush winning Ohio, the state that decided the election.The fact that Supreme Court took these cases is something the Administration or Congress has no control over.

And, Yes, Lincoln led the Republican Party to end slavery. As has been stated many a time before, the two parties seemed to have switched sides with the passing of civil rights legislation in the 1960s. The civil rights opposing “Dixiecrats” left the Democratic Party in protest and took their bigotry with them. Today it’s the Republican Party who includes members such as former KKK Grand Dragon David Duke, Jon Hubbard, and Loy Mauch
