Francis looks like another “caretaker Pope”, who will make no major changes in the Church. His “humble” persona will come under increasing scrutiny. There are serious questions about his actions (and inaction) during the “dirty war” in Argentina. I have no trouble with individual Catholics, who can be interesting, intelligent, compassionate people, but I do have trouble with certain elements of Catholic doctrine; in particular, I think that opposition to birth control is immoral — harmful to individuals and to society.
I’m with you. I’m not religious, but I used to do a lot of work with religious pacifist groups, and for a while I worked in a Catholic Worker hostel and soup kitchen. Religion is what you make of it. Good people make something good of it, bad people make something bad. But I still say that the Catholic Church is making a big moral mistake on birth control.
Yeah, I know Bergoglio is Argentine. There were other, younger cardinals from the southern hemisphere who were considered more likely to be the next pope. How much Bergoglio’s national origin mattered is up for debate. He may have been preferred by curia insiders because of his age & inexperience with Vatican administration. We’ll see if he is ready to clean house or not.
Both sides have flamethrowers. In the real world, most conservatives support moral authority over personal choices in behavior. Google “sex education”, “same sex marriage” and “prayer in school” for more information.
