There’s been a big campaign in my city to stop people jaywalking. They’ve painted on the crosswalks, “One of every two accident victims is a pedestrian.” They don’t seem to realise that means the other person isn’t….Local authorities also seem blissfully unaware that people jaywalk because local motorists ignore traffic lights completely and consign the traffic code to oblivion the moment they pass their driving test. You cross when you can, no matter when, because you can’t expect them to respect a red light, a crossing light, or anything else. I’m told it’s because people driving cars now grew up riding mopeds. I think in reality it’s just the local mentality, that basically says “I get to do what I want because it’s me, and you have to let me.”

Unless your city has an unthinkably high incidence of motorists striking multiple pedestrians, I can guarantee their statistics are bunk.

Imagine if the pedestrian said, “Not unless you say ‘please.’”

Considering the brief case and papers, they probably assumed he was a lawyer. It’s hard for some people to pass up the double points!
